Avianca is again a pioneer in the operation of aircraft technology, being the first airline
in Latin America to incorporate this aircraft into its fleet.
As part of its fleet renewal plan Avianca has incorporated the first Airbus A320 equipped with
sharklet wing tip devices into its fleet, making the aircraft the best performing and most eco-efficient
in its class.
The aircraft, valued at a list price of USD$ 82mn, is the first to be equipped with sharklets, and part
of an order of 36 aircraft with this new technology to be placed by AviancaTaca Holding S.A. with
the European manufacturer.
In addition to its eco-efficient technology, this aircraft is also powered by CFM engines (produced by
CFM International, a global supplier of equipment for commercial and military aircraft) and has
aerodynamic devices manufactured with composite materials, making them lighter and more
environmentally friendly. Its wings, with sharklet devices that stand 2.4 meters tall, help reduce fuel
consumption by up to 4% compared to the previous version of the A320, while decreasing CO2
emissions by 1,000 tons per aircraft per year.
In addition to these benefits, the aircraft also provide greater operational flexibility, extended flight
range and increased payload capacity. Thanks to the new devices, the Airbus A320 has an
additional range of 100 nautical miles compared to the previous model in its class or can carry an
additional payload of up to 450 kg.
This Airbus A320 with a capacity of 150 passengers—12 in Business Class and 138 in Economy
Class–has a modern and sophisticated in-flight entertainment system, which includes individual
touch screens in every seat and monitors with a port for USB and iPod.
―The incorporation of the first A320 with fuel saving sharklets to Avianca’s fleet is an important step
in the process of technological modernization that the Holding has undertaken, in order to provide
world class services to our customers. With this aircraft we ratify Avianca’s position at the vanguard
of technology while we begin a new era of efficiency and operational performance,” said Fabio
Villegas, CEO of AviancaTaca Holding.
“Thanks to the new A320 fitted with Sharklets, Avianca will be the first airline in the region to benefit
from a reduction in operating costs,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer – Customers at
Airbus. “Additionally, passengers will also enjoy the most eco-efficient single-aisle aircraft in the
