SATA is pleased to announce the publication of it’s new book “Do Mito Nasceram Asas… Uma História da Aviação Civil”.

The new book tying stamps to the history of aviation in the Azores written by a long time airline executive, Ricardo Madruga da Costa is now available. The book follows and presents a collection of stamps that as a group describe and depict the different stages in the history of aviation, from its myths and frustrations, to its accomplishments in the emergence of the airplane and the technological developments that came with it. Described are the means of propulsion including the evolution from the engine propeller to the jet, the reaching of supersonic flight, and finally, the creation of the space shuttle all mark the transitions to new levels that only foreshadowed an unpredictable path.

The history and evolution of civil aviation in the Azores was central to the founding of SATA back in 1941. The company launched its first flight in 1947. This was inevitable, as the Azores, being geographically in the middle of the Atlantic, were crucial to the launch of the airline routes between North America and Europe – as shown by some of stamps that make up the book.

With his stamp collection as a starting point, Ricardo da Costa Madruga, was not limited by its simple organization and presentation. In the historic outline of the stamps – his additional notes on technical, institutional and commercial changes give the publication the character of a true storybook.

Ricardo Madrigal da Costa, now retired from SATA, believes that the stamp collection was, “a very organized passion, practiced throughout life, with working at SATA Air Açores helping to add flavor.” This led him to embark on pages of this fantastic adventure in the history of civil aviation.

The book, “Wings Born From Myth… A History of Civil Aviation,” is on sale in SATA shops.
